Climate Action Plan

Climate change in Cuyahoga County is real. It is already affecting our environment, economy, and human health across Northeast Ohio.

How does a changing climate affect our region?

  • More frequent severe storms
  • Increased flooding
  • Increased heat
  • Increased precipitation
  • Poor air quality
  • Decreased ice cover on Lake Erie
  • Increased frost-free season
  • More intense algal blooms on waterways

Our plan has two parts:

Energy, transportation, land use, ecosystem, and health. These focus areas were used to create the following action items:

  1. Set targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
  2. Recommends actions to support community resilience.

Key terms:

Climate Change:
Climate change refers to a broad range of global phenomena created predominantly by burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to Earth’s atmosphere. These phenomena include the increased temperature trends described by global warming, but also encompass changes such as sea level rise; shifts in flower/plant blooming; and, extreme weather events.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG):
Any gas that absorbs infrared radiation (heat) in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide
