What is a Protective Services Officer
Protective Services in Cuyahoga County is a division of the Sheriff’s Department. Protective Services Officers provide visible and courteous safety to county employees and the public throughout Cuyahoga County buildings. Protective Service Officers respond to incidents, emergencies, special details on demand, alarm responses, motor vehicle accidents and address public safety issues.

Basic Duties
- Screen visitors at select county buildings.
- Investigate vehicle collisions involving county employees or vehicles.
- Maintenance of security alarms: CCTV, access control, metal detectors, body scanners, and X-ray machines.
- File reports for property lost/found, OSHA violations, workplace injuries/violence.
- Response to duress, fire, and security alarms.
- Provide supplemental assistance to sheriff department and/or other local law enforcement.

Typical Entry-Level Requirements
- 21 years old.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Must have or complete required Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) and Firearm courses and any testing that follows.
Training
Complete a training program and probation period.
Advancement
Great promotional potential (PSO Sergeant, PSO Lieutenant). Longevity bonus after 5 years of service.
Cuyahoga County Pay & Benefits
Starting pay: $18.59 per hour.
Benefits will vary by department but often include medical, dental, vision, paid time off, holiday pay, overtime pay, annual uniform allowance and retirement/pension plan.
Work Environment
Work in assigned county buildings primarily during business hours. Interact with county employees and visitors.
