Cold Weather Safety
- Dress in layers: Wear a hat, gloves, and scarf to reduce heat loss.
- Stay active: Moving around helps generate heat.
- Stay indoors during the worst part of the cold.
- Bring pets inside during cold weather.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle. Be prepared for dead car batteries, iced-over windshields, and broken car locks.
- Take action if your pipes freeze. Try to thaw them immediately or call a plumber for assistance. Learn how to shut off water valves, in case your pipes freeze and burst.
- Monitor forecasts: The National Weather Service issues four "tiers" of alerts to inform you of incoming hazardous weather.

Cold Weather Emergencies
- Check on sensitive groups: older adults, children, and pets.
- Know the signs of hypothermia:
- Shivering
- Numbness or weakness
- Glassy stare
- Apathy or impaired judgment
- Loss of consciousness
If you suspect someone has hypothermia, call 9-1-1, gently move the person to a warm place, remove any wet clothing and wrap in blankets, monitor breathing and circulation
- Know the signs of frostbite:
- Lack of feeling in the affected area
- Skin appearing waxy, discolored, or cold to the touch
If you suspect someone has frostbite, move the person to a warm place, warm affected area by soaking in warm water, bandage loosely, keep affected fingers or toes separated, seek medical care
